AR Drone review

What is the AR Drone?

The AR Drone is one of the finest products around today. If you are a massive gadget nut like myself, then this would be one of the ultimate gifts that you could buy me. It has a fairly hefty price tag, but I'd still love it.

The AR Drone, made by Parrot, is a remote-controlled quadrocopter, which you control via a Wi-Fi connection from a smartphone or tablet. This runs through an app which you have to download to your smartphone or tablet and it is both applicable for Apple and Android products.

Light and robust

AR Drone; basic information

The quadrocopter isn't large, but it isn't exactly a small gadget, either. Around 2ft in width and 2ft in length, the quadrocopter (as its name suggests) has four rotor blades to pilot it, and it has a robust carbon-fibre base in case you crash into a tree or wall (I would, don't worry). A fairly robust structure, the AR Drone creates its own Wi-Fi signal which means that you can control the device from up to a staggering 50m!

What makes it special?

Control the AR Drone from your phone or tablet
You mean other than what I've already mentioned? Okay; well what makes the AR Drone the best remote-controlled device around today is the fact that it has two on-board cameras: one that looks straight ahead and one that looks down. This makes the AR Drone just about the most unique gadget that I've ever seen. It's incredible. Since it has two cameras, it means that when you are flying, you can see where you are going, as well as what is below your Drone.

Also, through the app, you can record your flights so that you can show off to your friends where you have been and what you have seen. Despite being a large novelty, the cameras can also be incredible useful. You can see what's just over a hill or fence, what is stuck in the drain on the roof, or get closer to wildlife. There are many options available for this device with regards to how you can use it and, in my opinion, the AR Drone is one of the finest gadgets around. You can see what I mean in the video below.

Price tag?

Although the price varies across different websites and stores, the AR Drone is normally priced between £279.99 and £299.99.

Yes, that is a lot of money for what is essentially a toy. But it is a man-toy and, well, it's a man-toy which I would have if somebody much more well-off than I were to pay for it. For example, if I won the lottery, I would buy one.

It is still, to quote Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother, LEGEN-(wait for it)-DARY.
